Ghanzi: Cattle Country and the Gateway to the Kalahari

Ghanzi doesn't get the same billing as the Delta or Chobe, but it plays an outsized role in Botswana's economy and culture both. This western district is the country's cattle-farming heartland — over 200 farms, producing the free-range beef that makes up Botswana's third-largest industry. Ghanzi farmers alone supply roughly 75% of the beef the Botswana Meat Commission exports to the UK and EU.

The gateway to the Kalahari

Geography made Ghanzi a natural waypoint: it sits right at the fork in the Trans-Kalahari Highway connecting Gaborone, Maun, and Namibia, which has earned it the newer nickname "Gateway to the Kalahari." East of the farmland lies the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with a roughly 58km buffer zone separating cattle country from Kalahari wildlife and predators.

A genuine cultural mix

The district's population reflects a real mix of settlement history — San and Bakgalagadi communities (the original inhabitants), alongside Herero, Batawana, and Afrikaner families who arrived in the late 1800s. Sesarwa is the most widely spoken language here, followed by Shekgalagadi, Setswana, and Herero.

D'Kar and the Kuru Dance Festival

Just north of Ghanzi, the village of D'Kar is home to the Kuru Family of Organisations, a network dedicated to promoting San culture — including a genuinely respected community of San painters whose vividly colored oil paintings explore humanity's relationship with nature. D'Kar hosts the annual Kuru Traditional Dance and Music Festival every August. Nearby, Gantsi Craft sells authentic San-made goods — ostrich eggshell jewellery, fire-making sets, leatherwork, and carvings — with proceeds supporting local artisans directly.

Visiting

Some lodges around Ghanzi offer upscale rondavel or chalet stays; others let visitors experience traditional Kalahari hunter-gatherer life more directly, including desert walks led by San guides sharing survival knowledge built up over generations.
